“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Tina Turner. With her music and her boundless passion for life, she enchanted millions of fans around the world and inspired the stars of tomorrow. Today we say goodbye to a dear friend who leaves us all her greatest work: her music. All our heartfelt compassion goes out to her family. Tina, we will miss you dearly.”

Born Anna Mae Bullock on November 26, 1939 and raised in Nutbush, Tennessee, Turner rose to fame in the 1960s as part of Ike & Tina Turner Revue.

However, her relationship with Ike quickly became turbulent.

“My relationship with Ike was doomed the day he figured out I was going to be his moneymaker,” Turner wrote in her 2018 biography. “He needed to control me, economically and psychologically, so I could never leave him.”

Although the duo saw much success over throughout the 60s and 70s, the abuse was unbearable and Tina finally left Ike in 1976 and divorced him in 1978.

She went on to achieve great success becoming a trailblazer in the rock genre, setting world records for ticket sales, and winning countless awards.

Rest in peace Tina. You were simply the best.
