NCIS star Wilmer Valderrama admits he was set on fire in daring stunt: ‘Hair was burning’

Nick Torres (played by Wilmer Valderrama) has proven to be one of NCIS’ most popular characters with CBS viewers following his introduction at the beginning of season 14. This is in no doubt down to the fact Torres has been at the centre of some of the show’s most gripping storylines, whether it be his will-they-won’t-they romance with Ellie Bishop (Emily Wickersham) or throwing himself into danger in the drama’s high-octane action sequences. However, speaking with Kelly Clarkson on her self-titled NBC talk show, Valderrama discussed a time things almost went very wrong.

Keen to throw himself into the thick of the action, Valderrama told The Voice USA star he performs all his own stunts on NCIS.

Clarkson joined Valderrama for a chat about the drama and, of course, she wanted to learn more about why and how the actor puts himself at the centre of the dangerous scenes.

Kicking off the chat, Clarkson said: “This is the coolest thing, so you do all your own stunts on NCIS which I think is super rad and a tiny bit foolish…”

The CBS show fan-favourite explained: “I do, it is very foolish.”

Valderrama continued: “When I started performing, I started in comedy and we did a lot of physical comedy but I never did any real stunts.

“And with NCIS it was a great excuse to be disruptive and do things I hadn’t done before.”

The NCIS actor then touched on a moment which left him slightly fearful, however, when one stunt left him a bit too close for comfort with a nearby explosion.

“There was one moment when a garage blew up,” Valderrama went on.

He added: “And then I definitely smelt my hair burning, for sure.

“Those were one of the days when I thought maybe I should’ve let somebody else do this one.

“But you know, most of it is like a dislocated shoulder or tore something or whatever but not serious.”

Valderrama did admit there are one type of stunts he won’t put himself through following guidance from his mother.

“But like motorcycle stuff, I won’t do motorcycle things,” Valderrama continued.

“Because it scares my mum and, honestly there’s professionalism and there’s like…”

Clarkson jumped in as she began to tease the NCIS star, adding: “You’re a momma’s boy!”

Valderrama admitted: “Yeah, if my mum says ‘get off that thing,’ I’m like ‘alright, Mum’.”

With NCIS now in its 18th season and Valderrama enjoying his fifth year on the show, the action-packed stunts don’t look like slowing down any time soon.

Especially if the promo for the next few episodes are to go by as Torres will find himself in some rather tricky situations.

Not only will Torres be teaming up with Fornell (Joe Spano) to try and take down a drug ring, but he and Bishop will also find themselves trapped in episode six.

But will Valderrama be experiencing any more close shaves as season 18 continues?

NCIS season 18 returns to CBS on Tuesday, January 19.
